I. M. Pei (Ieoh Ming Pei) was a renowned Chinese-American architect who left an indelible mark on the world of modern architecture. Born on April 26, 1917, in Guangzhou, China, Pei became known for his innovative and iconic designs, characterized by a harmonious blend of modernist principles and traditional influences. He was born in Guangzhou, China and his family then moved to Hong Kong, then Shanghai, and he spent summers in Suzhou. Suzhou is famous for its landscapes and buildings, so Pei’s family garden (Shizilin) expanded his appreciation for nature and creativity.
Pei strengthened his architectural education through meeting Le Corbusier when he visited MIT in 1935. He also discovered the writings of Le Corbusier (pioneered modernism in architecture). Pei studied architecture at the University of Pennsylvania before transferring to MIT and received his master of architecture degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Design.
I. M. Pei was also strongly influenced by cubism and even credited cubism with the origin of modern architecture. He saw the art in architecture because it explores how solids and voids shape spaces and the effect of light seen in paintings, sculptures, and architecture.
